East Cambs Social Car Scheme

Our thanks go to the 22 volunteer drivers and the 3 volunteer office staff who made the service the success that it is.  During 2018-19 the service:

  • 121,890 miles (that's approximately 5 times around the world);

we currently require more volunteer drivers.  If you can assist us please contact Granville on 01353 666166 or contact us on Facebook or Twitter.

We offer door-to-door transport to people who are frail, elderly, disabled and isolated.  Download our leaflet here.  You can also download a drivers application form HERE.

 What can you use the service for?

Trips can be arranged to attend hospital appointments, the surgery, dentist, shopping, hairdressing, visiting friends and relatives. During busy periods priority will be given for hospital or doctor  appointments.

We do not have access to wheelchair accessible transport therefore you should be able to get in and out of a car unaided and be able to walk a short distance.

How do I book a journey?

Call the social car desk on 01353 666553 Monday - Friday from 9.30 - 12.30.  There is an answer phone at all other times.

All our drivers are volunteers who have an enhanced DBS check.

It might take some time to find a driver for your journey so please give us as much advance notice as you can.

How much will it cost?

Passengers make a contribution of 45p per mile towards the cost of the journey.  This is from the drivers home and back again.  There is a minimum contribution of £6.00, which covers all journeys up to 13 miles.

If you are on certain benefits and are making a journey to a hospital it may be possible to claim some of the cost of this journey back.

 Who can use it?
  • People who are disabled, frail older people, isolated and others with discretion of the car service
  • People who live in East Cambridgeshire – see below

Call the car desk on 01353 666553  Monday - Friday 9.30 - 12.30.  An Answerphone service is available at other times.
